Get weekly local produce — and so much more.

CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture”, which is a model that connects local farmers directly to consumers. As a member, you’ll enjoy:

  • Access to the freshest, highest quality and most delicious produce around! Local, sustainably grown vegetables are nutrient dense and loaded with flavor. You’ll probably eat more of them, too.

  • The shortest possible supply chain - your veggies get harvested and delivered directly to your pick up site within a day or two. This reduces your “food miles” AND ensures your food dollars go directly to our farm & farmers (instead of a typical 20-30% to intermediaries).

  • Connection with the land and humans growing your food. That means you can get to know our farming practices, our values, and how we operate as a team. Plus, you have an open invite to visit!

  • Sliding scale pricing & low-income options. Participate in a model that ensures more people can access local, organically grown produce. You can choose your price point based on your income and access to wealth.

  • Supporting our social justice mission — our farm is a radical, anti-racist, environmentally responsible, LGBTQ+ owned and operated cooperative farm. Together, we’ll continue to work towards a more just and equitable food system, country and world.

It felt amazing to support a queer farm and to get delicious food weekly. I loved that my food was harvested with love from people within my community.

What's included in your membership?

I. Your 20-week VEGGIE SHARE

We offer two different vegetable share sizes to choose from:

  • The Full Share contains a diversity of 8-9 items, and generally feeds 2-4 people (or 1 farmer / veggie enthusiast!)

  • The Half Share (actually about two thirds the size of the full) contains a diversity of 5-6 items, and generally feeds 1-2 people.

  • ***Note: Half Shares are currently sold out for the 2021 season, but we still have a few Full Shares available. *****

Click through the photo gallery to take a peek at some sample FULL shares from the 2020 season (the HALF share is about 2/3 the size of what you see there) . The types of vegetables in your box will rotate throughout the growing season — we grow over 100 varieties! You can count on some typical favorites and you’ll likely be introduced to some new veggies to try, too.

II. Optional Add-On SHARES

We’re proud to partner with neighboring farmers to provide a selection of optional “full diet” add-on shares for those of you who wish to source even more of your food from local farms. When you check out in the online farm store, you’ll see the option to add weekly shares of Fruit, Eggs, Cheese, Meat, and/or Yogurt to your membership. Note: add-on shares are only available with the purchase of a vegetable share.

III. Weekly member newsletters

As part of your CSA membership, you’ll receive an email newsletter every week. We spend a lot of time on these, because a huge reason the CSA model is so meaningful to us is getting to connect with y’all.

Each newsletter will let you know what’s coming in that week’s box, as well as some recipes + tips for what to do with your share. It’s also a place we’ll share more in-depth notes on what’s happening out in the field, reflections on our food system, sharing about our community partnerships and food access initiatives, and more. And pictures! Lots of beautiful pics.

Did you know? We are committed to little-to-no food waste at Rock Steady. If you need to miss a pick-up or two throughout the season, don’t worry; all leftover produce is donated.

Pricing & Payment options

We believe everyone deserves the right to healthy, delicious produce — regardless of their income level. Yet, typically only affluent folks can afford access to local, sustainably grown food.

To expand access, we offer sliding scale pricing and flexible payment plans. Together, we can create more equity, sustainability and diversity in our food system by paying based on our available resources.

How IT works

IMG_8639.JPG

During the sign-up process, you’ll be able to select the payment level that best aligns with your income and access to wealth: Lower, Middle, Upper, Contributor. (If you’re not sure which one fits you best, or this model is unfamiliar to you, we offer some guidelines to consider in our FAQ section at the bottom of this page.)

  • The “Middle Income/Wealth” payment level reflects the market value, and we calculate what goes into each week’s share to hit that mark.

  • Lower Income/Wealth level is discounted ~20%, Upper Income/Wealth level is +20%, and Contributor Income/Wealth level is + 40%.

  • Solidarity shares are discounted at least 40%, or free.

The cost for the Full Vegetable Share is $550 - $975 for the 20-week season ($695 = Middle level).

Half Share is $370 - $650 for the 20-week season ($465 = Middle level).

This cost includes the vegetables themselves, as well as an admin & distribution fee of $3/wk, which helps offset the significant expenses of packaging materials, delivery labor, fuel, pick up coordination and/or staffing — which are all expenses that are well beyond the actual production costs of growing the food.

Payment OPTIONS

Payment in Full is requested whenever possible, which is how the CSA model provides important financial security for our farm.

However, we are happy to offer an installment plan for those who need it. We ask for a 20% deposit upon registration, and that your balance is paid in full no later than August 1st (if possible, by the start of the CSA in June).

To sign up on a payment plan, enter the discount code 20%DEPOSIT during check out. After you register, we’ll be in touch to arrange a payment plan schedule that will work for you. If you aren’t able to put down the 20% right now, but want to secure your spot, send us an email and we’ll work something out.

Regardless of whether you pay in full or on a payment plan, we accept all major credit cards. Check is also gladly accepted - in fact, it saves us about 3% in transaction fees.

If you would like to mail a check, enter the discount code PAYBYCHECK during check out, which will allow you to submit your membership info without payment. Then, mail your check made out to Rock Steady Farm, 41 Kaye Rd, Millerton NY 12546.

We also accept SNAP/EBT through our Solidarity Shares, which you can learn more about and apply for here.

Have you heard about our Food Access Fund? In addition to our standard sliding scale, we know that our lowest-income community members still can’t afford a share. Partially and fully subsidized “solidarity shares” are offered through our Food Access Fund. Discounted payment with SNAP/EBT is accepted through this program as well. The need is huge; and while our reach increases each season, our wait list grows as well. Learn more about contributing here, or apply to receive a free/discounted share here.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does it start, and what’s the season schedule?

Early June, exact date is TBD — we’ll keep members posted via email. We like to keep some flexibility here, because of the variability seasonal conditions. Also, we usually to take one week off in-season, which is a time for us to make process improvements and catch up on field work — of course that doesn’t count towards your 20 weeks, and we’ll give you plenty of notice.

What is your cancelation policy?

When you decide to become a CSA member, you are making a commitment to our farm, and we are very grateful for your trust. Because we really count on that commitment, there are no refunds, full or partial. If needed, you may find someone to transfer your membership to, but payment and coordination would be your sole responsibility. If something unexpected happens, you’re always welcome to reach out to us, and of course we’ll help if we can (for example, connect you with someone on the waitlist, if the CSA is sold out).

WHAT IF I CAN’T PICK UP MY SHARE?

We encourage members to send a friend or family member if they can’t pick up their share. If you do not pick up your share in the designated window, we will make sure it doesn’t go to waste by donating it to one of our community partners.

Note: As a convenience for our local members who pick-up at our farm on Saturdays, late pick up is available in our cooler throughout the weekend.

IS THE FARM ORGANIC?

While not "Certified Organic", we use only organic, holistic practices. These practices include Integrated Pest Management (IPM), using row-cover instead of spraying, organic low-spray techniques (a last resort), cover cropping, organic compost, organic greenhouse soil, organic granular fertilizer, increasing pollinators through planting natives and diverse plant and much more!

WHICH VEGETABLES DO YOU GROW?

While this is not a complete list, and we might tweak our crop list in the planning process, here is a sense of what you’ll find in your share throughout the season:

Spring: Beets, Bok Choi, Cabbage, Carrots, Collards, Escarole, Mixed Greens, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Radish, Scallion, Snap Peas, Swiss Chard, Tatsoi, Japanese Turnips (Hakurei), Pea-shooots

Summer: Broccoli, Beans, Basil, Cilantro, Corn, Dill, Cantaloupe, Carrots, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Lettuce, Fresh Onion, Hot/Sweet Peppers, Scallion, Summer Squash, Tomatillo, Tomato, Ground Cherries, Watermelon, Zucchini

Autumn: Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Collards, Daikon Radish, Dill, Kale, Leeks, Lettuce, Onion, Potato, Sweet Potato, Radish, Swiss Chard, Winter Squash, Hakurei Turnip, pea-shoots

Note: Some items such as corn and potatoes are purchased from neighboring farms, because they are not profitable for us to grow at our scale. Selectively outsourcing in this way allows us to foster farmer-to-farmer relationships and strategically free up production space for specialty crops and care of our land. We will notify our you in the weekly newsletter if you’re getting something from one of our farmer friends!

DO YOU ACCEPT VOLUNTEERS?

Absolutely, yes please! Click here for info.

I'm not sure what I should pay on the sliding scale

Below is a short list of guidelines to assist you as you navigate the question of how much you can afford.

Consider paying more on the scale if you: Own the home you live in, have investments, retirement accounts, inherited money, travel recreationally, work part-time by choice, have access to family money and resources in times of need, have a relatively high degree of earning power due to level of education (or gender and racial privilege, class background, etc.) Even if you are not currently exercising your earning power, we ask you to recognize this as a choice.

Consider paying less on the scale if you: Are supporting children or have other dependents, have significant debt, have medical expenses not covered by insurance, have tuition/educational expenses, receive public assistance, have immigration related expenses, are a senior citizen.

The scale is intended to be a map, inviting each of us to take inventory of our financial resources and look deeper at our levels of financial privilege. It is a way to work towards economic justice on a local level. While we do ask you to look inward, please don’t stress about it. Pay what feels right.

*Thank you to Underground Alchemy, Soul Fire Farm, Radherb, Third Root, and the Kula Center for their inspiration, dedication and work with developing sliding scale models.*

Is everything priced on a sliding scale?

Only the vegetable shares are priced on a sliding scale. Because we buy in the add-on shares from other farmers, unfortunately we don’t have the flexibility to offer different price points for those products.
